First introduced just over 3 years ago, the idea of the LEZ (Low Emission Zone) was conceived to reduce the levels of pollution in the capital by encouraging the vehicles causing the most pollution to become cleaner. The LEZ covers the majority of Greater London and to drive within it without charge you must drive a vehicle which meets certain emissions standards that have been put in place to limit the amount of pollution coming from their exhausts.
From 3 January 2012 the LEZ emissions standards will become much stricter and will affect for more vehicles than are currently affected. It doesn't matter whether your vehicle is used for commercial or private purposes - it will still need to meet the required standards.
All roads within Greater London, those at Heathrow and parts of the M1 and M4 are included. However, the M25 is not included (even where it passes within the Greater London Authority boundary). From 2012, the following commercial vehicles will be required to pay the daily charge or face a hefty penalty:
- Articulated lorries Over 3.5 tonnes gross vehicle weight Registered as new before 1 Oct 2006
- Lorries Over 3.5 tonnes gross vehicle weight Registered as new before 1 Oct 2006
- Flat bed lorries Over 3.5 tonnes gross vehicle weight Registered as new before 1 Oct 2006
- Coaches Over 5 tonnes gross vehicle weight Registered as new before 1 Oct 2006
- Larger vans 1.205 tonnes unladen to 3.5 gross vehicle weight Registered as new before 1 Jan 2002
- Minibuses 5 tonnes or less gross vehicle weight Registered as new before 1 Jan 2002
- Smaller vans 1.205 tonnes unladen to 3.5 gross vehicle weight Registered as new before 1 Jan 2002
- Horseboxes Over 1.205 tonnes unladen vehicle weight may need to take action depending on registration date
- Motorised caravans Over 2.5 tonnes gross vehicle weight may need to take action depending on registration date
- Light 4x4 Utilities 1.205 tonnes unladen to 3.5 gross vehicle weight Registered as new before 1 Jan 2002
